On the 21st of September 2024, I completed the Liverpool Cathedral Abseil. I abseiled 150ft down the iconic West Gate of Liverpool Cathedral to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.
The Liverpool Cathedral Abseil is an amazing way to raise money for important charities while completing a new adventure. The event involves a 150ft free hang abseil down the West Gate (main entrance) of Liverpool Cathedral with a beautiful sandstone backdrop and an aerial view of the city. Liverpool Cathedral announced via their website that the abseil in 2024 raised “approximately £180,000 for 28 charities”.
I chose to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity which provides ‘lifesaving equipment’ and ‘moments of magic’ for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. The money raised helps to support the amazing work that the charity does for the hospital and the community.
I was filled with adrenaline as I stood on the platform at the top of the West Gate, waiting to step backwards off the scaffolding. I was extremely nervous as I lifted my feet off the edge to make contact with the sandstone wall. My nerves soon disappeared when I started my descent.
Dangling in mid-air on the side of the Liverpool Cathedral is an experience I will never forget. The views of Liverpool were unmatched. I could see every famous Liverpool landmark: the docks and the Liver Buildings, Radio City Tower, the Metropolitan Cathedral and parts of the University of Liverpool campus. Abseiling down Liverpool Cathedral is an incredible opportunity to see an aerial view of Liverpool. The sense of achievement when your feet touch the ground is overwhelming. There was a great atmosphere with lots of friends and family cheering on their loved ones and encouraging other participants.
This year the Liverpool Cathedral Abseil is taking place over four Saturdays in July, on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th of July. You can fundraise for lots of incredible charities on the list or a charity that is close to your heart.
Whether you are looking for your next challenge or ready to conquer your fear of heights, abseiling down one of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks is a great event to take part in. When you are walking around campus and see the Cathedral towering over the landscape you can tell everyone that you’ve abseiled from the top of the West Gate!
Fundraising for charity can help to raise crucial funds that can be used to change lives. Completing the Liverpool Cathedral Abseil is a fantastic way to support local charities and give back to our community. Every single penny raised will make a difference.
